An interesting post here from Paul Graham predicting the demise of Microsoft in today’s world of broadband, Google, Ajax and Apple. He argues that the shadow cast over the software business by Microsoft for the past 20-odd years has now lifted as a result of their increasing irrelevance in today’s world of web-based applications. Microsoft still control the desktop world, but that is now gone and so they no longer matter.
If you have grown up in the Microsoft world and can remember the move from DOS to Windows 1.0 in 1985 or more likely Windows 2.0 in 1987, and then marvelled at the wonders on Windows 95, then it will be equally fascinating to watch their decline over the next few years!
If your interested, a rather geeky history of Windows can be found here and, if you really do have nothing better to do, a overly detailed history of Microsoft can be grazed here.
